Gabrielle Benak

Gabrielle Benak (b. 1996, New York) is a mixed media artist based in New York whose work spans watercolor, collage, textile, and found materials. While watercolor remains central to her practice, Benak resists the confines of any one medium, embracing layered processes that reflect the intricacies of identity, memory, and personal mythologies. Her richly detailed compositions are rooted in a visual language of maximalism and ornamentation, exploring the ways we document and preserve the self through visual excess.

Benak’s practice moves fluidly between autobiography and fabrication, blending lived experience with imagined narratives to construct lush, elaborate scenes. Her work often grapples with the tension between reality and performance, presenting staged moments that are as much about inner truth as they are about outward spectacle. Through symbols of adornment, domesticity, and ritual, she cultivates a world in which the personal becomes theatrical and preservation becomes an act of empowerment.

Themes of embellishment, narrative layering, and visual abundance course through her work, positioning her paintings and mixed media pieces as sites of both introspection and display. By leaning into excess and artifice, Benak challenges minimalist norms and asserts a space for maximalist storytelling as a legitimate and potent form of documentation.
